RAGNAR LO∂BROK
Ragnar is played by the blue-eyed Travis Fimmel who possesses the character of Ragnar Lo∂brok with intensity.

Not active in social media, you can still hear about his behind the scenes antics from his fellow cast members. There is no denying that he keeps Ragnar the moving force in VIKINGS to date.

Ragnar is a complicated character, who has shown real development over the prior three seasons of this show.

From being an adventurous man with a farm, wife, and two kids, he has found himself in positions of leadership.

Courtesy of thelastofbaretheon on Tumblr

He has loved, lost, fought, won, been betrayed, found an unlikely friend in a Christian slave—Athelstan…

… only to lose him to his longtime friend, Floki, who killed Athelstan in what he believed was a mission from the gods.

The new King of the Danes has not had an easy time of it.

The Seer prophesied sons for him, but his beloved Lagertha could only give him one, so Ragnar has married again and sired more sons—sons who would earn more renown than he.

“The sons of Ragnar Lothbrok will be spoken of as long as men have tongues to speak.”

“They will enjoy that much fame?”

“One of them will marry the daughter of a King. Another will discover and sail around a sea that has no tides. All this and more, have I forseen.”

“Then they will have more fame than I, their father?”

Still, he perseveres, seeking to expand his influence, gain wealth, explore new lands and people, and somehow enter Valhalla with honor.

Which led him to Paris.

Ragnar’s plan for faking his death and storming Paris from inside went off beautifully, but he was still a very sick and injured man when we saw him last.

Courtesy of historyvikings on Tumblr

As symbolized in the preview, the snakes are closing in. Ragnar has to be able to defend his crown from challengers. As he says in the preview, power is addicting and there are many who would try to take it from him.

I’ll admit, this is one place I’m sort of hoping the TV series deviates from the Sagas, and you know us – always nagging about historical accuracy. But fear is slithering through her heart after seeing the previews…

BJÖRN IRONSIDES

Only son of Ragnar Lo∂brok and his wife Lagertha, Björn has grown from an opinionated traditionalist of a boy in the first season of VIKINGS into a man who took an unconventional wife and has met great battles in foreign lands. Played in his adult years by the imposing Alexander Ludwig, he’s a splendid mix of his parents.

Courtsey of matthewdaddyrio on Tumblr

Ludwig has a flare of social networking during the season as well, and clearly gets along well with his onscreen family. He brings attitude as well as dignity to his role, here.

Courtesy of lucy0705 on Tumblr

An accomplished warrior, at this time, Björn is still facing issues that could be distracting. He is bound to be torn in this upcoming season over his loyalties to his parents. He’s Lagertha’s only heir for her earldom.

Courtesy of yocalio on Tumblr

Ragnar has sons with his new wife, Aslaug, to inherit his crown. But would he rather have Björn by his side?

Courtesy of mrscharliehunnam on Tumblr

Björn acquitted himself marvelously in the battle for Paris.

Courtsey of historyvikings on Tumblr

Björn has been left, too, though he doesn’t know it yet. His slave-turned-freedwoman-turned-wife Þórunn was unable to cope with the scars she sustained in battle and the trauma it had caused her. We last see her standing on a ridge, looking back at Kattegat as she leaves – presumably for good.

Courtesy of jordinelle on Tumblr

How will he direct his steps in the coming season? His father was gravely wounded when we last saw him, but he seemed to lean on Björn at the invasion of Paris.

Courtesy of historyvikings on Tumblr

Will Björn return to the more traditional views of his own childhood or venture further into new thoughts and ideas?

It will be interesting to follow him as this season of VIKINGS progresses.

We’re Talking Aslaug on VIKINGS

.¸¸•.¸¸.•´¯`• (¯`•ღ•´¯)•´¯`•.¸¸.•.¸¸.

Heillir! We—Lissa Bryan and Sandi Layne—are two historical fiction authors with a serious thing for Vikings. And for VIKINGS, the amazing series that is going to begin its fourth season on HISTORY CHANNEL.

Follow us on twitter, #ShieldGeeks, at 8pm Eastern for the next couple of weeks as we talk about the main characters of the show, including special features for Thorsdays, er, Thursdays, as well as We Ship It day on the 14th and even a Favorite Dead Character feature.

Today we’re going to be discussing Ragnar’s controversial second wife, Aslaug.

ASLAUG

Princess of Legend, Daughter of the legendary Brynhildr and Sigurd, Aslaug is the fabled and fecund second wife of Ragnar Lo∂brok.

Courtsey of remusjohnslupin on Tumblr

She is portrayed by the stately and striking Alyssa Sutherland, who brings the perfect air to a character initially roundly despised by many fans.

Courtesy of aslaug.co.vu on Tumblr

Sutherland, though, is amazing as a woman of strength and power in the show and I’m looking forward to seeing what is in store for her as her husband’s role grows in the wider world.

Courtsey of remusjohnslupin on Tumblr

Aslaug was introduced in Season One. She appeared in Ragnar’s life when he was away from Lagertha (whom he clearly loved, even if he was disappointed over the recent loss of a pregnancy).

Courtesy of aslaug.co.vu on Tumblr

She is gifted with the Sight, it would seem. She would be considered a völva – a seeress who has visions.

Courtesy of vetica on Tumblr

Ragnar was definitely attracted—much to his son’s disgust—and before we knew it, Aslaug sailed up to Kattegat, pregnant with Jarl Ragnar’s child.

Her time at Kattegat has been at times very hard on her. She supplanted the popular and mighty Lagertha in a place that, to the princess, seemed quite primitive and dirty.

Courtesy of alswearengen on Tumblr

She’s borne sons for her husband without possessing the entirety of his heart, and she has often been considered an interloper during her years in Kattegat.

Courtesy of mametupa on Tumblr

Aslaug might have others issues. She had an affair with a mysterious stranger called Harbard (whom Floki thought might be Odin in disguise.)

Courtesy of historyvikings on Tumblr

She tried to seduce her husband on his last visit, but he rebuffed her advances.  There might be a Little Stranger on the way and Ragnar would know the baby couldn’t be his.

But now, her husband is King, as we begin the fourth season. I’m thinking her earlier life will be of great assistance as their life changes.

Courtsey of jorindelle on Tumblr

The series hasn’t yet explored Aslaug’s childhood as it’s described in the Sagas. It would add some depth and dimension to her character, and explain some of her very-understandable fears of instability and abandonment. She’s built the kind of loving home for her children that she never had… but will she be able to shield them from the storm that’s coming?

We’re Talking Vikings Again! ROLLO

By elithanathile on Tumblr

The Shieldmaidens of History (Protecting the Innocent from Anachronisms) welcome you back to our series on the History Channel show Vikings.

146a6-lissa-bryanHistorical fiction author Lissa Bryan is with me again to discuss the historical aspects of the show. Sandi has written her own series on Vikings, both well-written and carefully researched. (You can read my review of her Tudor love story, Under These Restless Skies here on my site.)

.¸¸•.¸¸.•´¯`• (¯`•ღ•´¯)•´¯`•.¸¸.•.¸¸.

Heillir! We—Lissa Bryan and Sandi Layne—are two historical fiction authors with a serious thing for Vikings. And for VIKINGS, the amazing series that is going to begin its fourth season on HISTORY CHANNEL.

Follow us on twitter, #ShieldGeeks, at 8pm Eastern for the next seventeen days as we talk about the main characters of the show, including special features for Thorsdays, er, Thursdays, as well as We Ship It day on the 14th and even a Favorite Dead Character feature.

Then, on February 18th, VIKINGS, Season Four will begin and Sandi and I will be live-tweeting during each episode, as has been our custom since Season One. We’ll follow up with a more detailed discussion on our websites the following day.

We are SO excited! So, Warriors and Shieldmaidens all, get your weapons and armor ready, because it’s going to be an amazing season!

We’re going to begin by rolling in with ROLLO.

ROLLO

Rollo is played by the gorgeous (and often shirtless!) Clive Standen.

Courtesy of princessgisla on Tumblr

Standen has, during the season, an active presence on Twitter and Facebook.

Rollo is Ragnar Lo∂brok’s brother, and he often feels overshadowed by him.

Courtesy of lecterlannister on Tumblr

Time after time, Rollo is tempted to betray Ragnar—who seems to be favored by the gods—but has so far supported Ragnar at the moment when that support is most direly needed.

But, at the end of last season, Rollo was readying himself to marry Gisla, a Frankish princess with attitude to spare.

Courtesy of alaynes on Tumblr

Will this serve Ragnar’s greater cause? Rollo’s ambitions? History gives us some idea, but we don’t know how that will be interpreted by History Channel!

What will happen this season? Will he be loyal to his Viking brother or his new father-in-law?

Courtsey of princessgisla on Tumblr

His marriage did not have an auspicious start, with his bride proclaiming publicly that she’d rather be raped by dogs than have him touch her. Gisla seems a little unclear on how this “ninth century princess” thing works, and is outraged that her father gave her hand in marriage without consulting her.

Courtesy of fyeahclivestanden on Tumblr

But more on her another day! (As you may imagine, we have tons to say!)

Rollo could be tempted to forge his own destiny in France, rather than being dependent on his brother. The Seer told him he would dance on the seashore if he knew what the gods had in store for him. We also heard that the “bear” will be crowned king… but could that be Björn, whose name means bear?

Rollo is a fierce warrior, charismatic and intelligent, but he often lets himself be swayed by pride. The pride that will push him to equal or outshine his brother Ragnar might be the means by which he succeeds to make his own name and his own legend.

It also might be the force which destroys him.

A Hidden Identity. . .

Wow, it’s December! Not sure when that happened. It’s been busy around here, that’s for sure! Today is my youngest’s fourteenth birthday, which is cool, but it brings home to me that he’ll be starting his high school career in the upcoming year. That’s kind of awesome. My older son will be getting a degree in graphic arts in 2016, all things being equal.

And I should be coming out with a new book. Shocking, I know. Here’s another peek at my upcoming historical fiction.

secret son blog title

“Tell me.” Muscles straining and flexing over his bones, Ruádhán ground the demand between clenched teeth. “Charis. Tell me.”

“Come.” With only a slight furrow on her smooth brow to illustrate her concern, the only mother he had ever known led him away, through the silent throng of villagers and visiting guests.

Behind him, though, he heard the whispers.

“Really? The usurper’s son?”

“Didn’t Ide marry him, all those summers past?”

“I remember her; her hair was like his. Just like. Why didn’t I see that before?”

“Tuirgeis’s son? The invader’s son? But he’s one of us!”

Ruádhán couldn’t seem to see beyond a tunnel of shadow that surrounded him. The only other living being, aside from Charis, he could see or hear was Mac Tire. The hound bounded up to him, licking almost frantically at Ruádhán’s clenched fist.

“Tell me,” he demanded again.

“When we get outside the walls, I’ll tell you, and not before.”

I am building a Pinterest board for this book. You can check it out, if you want. It’s here.

If you or someone you know is into Vikings, historical fiction, Ireland, romances, sword fights . . . all that fun stuff, consider adding the Éire’s Viking Trilogy to your reading and/or gift lists this holiday season!

Too Much Frosting?

So, I was doing some editing (okay, so I can’t really edit myself, but I can re-read, can’t I?) and thinking thoughts as I did so, because clearly, merely re-reading to look for ways to improve wasn’t making my brain busy enough.

I started to visualize writing as a cake.

Now, one can write a good passage and it’s like a fine, round, yellow cake. Light, airy, uniform in color and texture. A sweet treat to meet the requirements of “dessert” or what-have-you. There is nothing wrong with a plain cake. It can be lovely with a cup of coffee or tea or a glass of milk. Perfect.

freshly baked cake on white background

freshly baked cake on white background

Sometimes, though, we want to create more. So we add icing. A nice, smooth, complementary icing that we can spread with whatever flourishes we wish over our yellow cake. This dresses up the dessert, makes it prettier, perhaps, and more elaborate. A lovely presentation that is appropriate for many venues.

Occasionally, however, we are called upon to do more. We might add decorative touches. Flowers. Elaborate edible scrollwork. Edible metallic additions that make the cake sparkle. Or we might get exotic and use unusual toppings or compote and make our cake a work of art.

And all of this is lovely. It is.

In our writing, this is true as well. Making a passage an elaborate work of art can be gorgeous and a true literary experience.

But sometimes, we might have too much icing. Too many ambitious turns of phrase. Too many coy references. An overabundance of . . . something. In small doses, as with dessert, such things can be appealing and tasty and lovely to consume as one reads. But used too often, and there is a surfeit for which one can lose appreciation as the story goes on.

Sometimes, the most effective way of telling a story is just to tell it without decoration. To use strong verbs without a lot of pretty adverbs. To use names and basic pronouns. To use solid ingredients to let the flavor of the story reach the reader without a lot of interference.

And sometimes, it’s good to decorate.

A first draft is not the time to think about these things, for those friends of mine trying to finish a draft or those who are working on their NaNoWriMo project this year. A first draft is to get the words out. Get to The End. Get it done.

But later, when you read your work over, consider your presentation. Do you have too much frosting on the cake?

She is discovered by Justin, an ex-soldier who is intent on making his way to Florida before the winter sets in. Justin coaxes her out of her hiding place and convinces her to join him on his journey, because a warmer climate will be their best chance  against the extremes of Mother Nature.

In time, they discover that they aren’t the only survivors. Some are friendly but some have had their minds destroyed by the high fever. Then there are those who simply take what they want, leaving Carly and Justin with no choice but to defend what is theirs.

Teaser Tuesday – Lisa Bilbrey

Sophie Crenshaw has saved the world by preventing the
Angel’s Heart from falling into the hands of Whitley Monroe. Now, she and her
fiancé Henry Chang have returned to Austin, Texas, and back to the real world.
Or have they?Having been declared the savior of all mankind, Sophie finds that magic is all
around her. As she struggles to find her way, she’s bombarded by nightly dreams
that have her on edge. Will she be able to keep her sanity while trying to
decipher the meaning behind her visions? Or will an unknown enemy get to her
first?

Excerpt:

 “It’s
always been around me, hasn’t it? I just hadn’t noticed it before the
binds broke.”
“Probably,” Deva admitted. The silence that filled the air around them
was deafening. Only the sounds of the other patrons enjoying their meals
rattled around them. “Sophie . . .”
“Don’t worry about me,” she replied, a tremor lacing her words.
Suddenly, a loud roar of thunder tore through the sky, causing the
windows to shake. The entire pub became silent, and Sophie looked over
at Iona, once again finding her staring.
“I really need to learn to
control that.”
“Eh, it makes things funner, or is it more fun?” Tanner laughed, though
Sophie could hear the void in his laughter.
“Yeah, keeps everyone on their toes,” Jonah added, giving her a weak
smile.
Sophie brought her hand up to grip the stone hanging around her neck. “I
suppose it does.”

Then he meets Stephanie, and suddenly, his focus is less on his military service and more on the pretty brunette who has stolen his heart. When he becomes aware of Steph’s resentment toward the military, he worries their relationship is doomed.
When faced with the realization that she’s fallen in love with a soldier, can Steph’s wounds from the past be healed with love in her present . . . and in her future?

I kiss her. Hard. She groans and wraps her arms around my neck, pulling me to her until we’re as close as we’ve ever been. For a few fantastic minutes, we’re all tongues and hands and moans, because it’s been a long time since we’ve touched and we’re both a little worked-up. But after a while, our frantic kisses slow to something much more familiar—something warm and soft and real.
We’re both breathless when we pull away. And, now, we can actually see each other’s faces because at some point, in the middle of the most awesome kiss of my life, the electricity came back on. And Bangle joined us on the couch.
I eye the cat warily. “She’s going to claw my eyes out for touching you.”
