Please welcome Forbes Arnone and her short story, In My Mother’s Footsteps, today.
Her debut story is featured in the anthology Summer Heat (Beach Reads #1) published by Renaissance Romance Publishing.
Anela Alborn’s life is a lie. After growing up without the love of a father, her mother reveals his identity. Tragedy strikes and she sets off on an adventure that leads to more than she could ever imagine. Bumping into Christian Sivers distracts her from the real man of her dreams, her father. Will he live up to her dreams? And does she follow in her mother’s footsteps?
Forbes Arnone chooses a beautiful, romantic place for her debut. Presenting a flawed heroine in a short story is brave, but Anela feels like a real person from the get-go in this story. There are two sub-stories here, really. The first is the Search for Anela’s Father. He’s a colonel and she has never met him. Bravely, a bit defiantly too, Anela presents herself in this quest for her father and this story is sweet and poignant.
The second sub-story is Conquest of Sergeant Sivers OR Loving Anela. Unaccustomed to relationships, Anela doesn’t know what to do with the handsome military man who seems to be pursuing her. She’s wary of following in her mother’s footsteps—something she doesn’t want to do, really—but her feelings are too strong to be denied.
For me, the best moments of this story are when the two sub-stories intersect. 😉 I remember loving a man in uniform who was stationed in Hawai’i, and Arnone’s story made me smile on many counts.
The ingredients for a fun summer read are all in this short story. Feisty heroine, handsome hero, passionate moments, exotic locales, and some cultural enrichment in the bargain.
Check it out!
